What Is 420? The Origins of a Cannabis Holiday
Understanding what is 420 starts with a small group of high school students in San Rafael, California. Back in 1971, a group that called themselves the “Waldos” used “420” as a code word to meet at 4:20 p.m. after school near the Louis Pasteur statue on campus. Their original mission was to track down a rumored abandoned cannabis crop near Point Reyes.
From there, the story of 420 origins takes an interesting turn. The term spread through connections with the Grateful Dead and their extended community throughout the 1970s and 80s. By the early 1990s, cannabis publication High Times had picked it up and helped push April 20 into wider cultural awareness as an unofficial cannabis holiday.
A few myths have attached themselves to the number over the years: that it was a police radio code, that it referenced the number of chemical compounds in cannabis, or that it traced back to a Bob Dylan lyric. None of those hold up. Historical documents from the Waldos themselves confirm the San Rafael story as the most credible origin on record.
Today, April 20 is recognized globally as a day for cannabis communities to come together, and in legal markets like Massachusetts, it brings with it real celebrations, real promotions, and a genuine sense of shared culture.
